Why We’re Retiring The Pods
Sometimes when you live somewhere every day, you stop seeing it.
You walk the same paths, open the same curtains and look out at the same fells. The day to day takes over and you forget that what has become normal to you is exactly the reason people travel hundreds of miles to visit.
The reality is, we live in someone else’s desktop screensaver and sometimes it takes our guests to remind us of that.
This year, they have.
Over the past year, guest after guest has told us the same thing:
“These don’t feel like pods anymore.”
And they’re right.
After more than ten years since our very first glamping pod arrived on the farm, we’ve realised we’ve outgrown the term.
So yes, we’re retiring The Pods.
But they’re not going anywhere.
They have a new name, a clearer story and the same Lake District views that made guests fall in love with them in the first place.
From today, they’re called The Lookouts.
Lake District accommodation built for the view
Last year, we replaced our original glamping pods with two completely redesigned accommodation units here at The Yan, near Grasmere.
We made them larger. We gave them bigger beds, bigger bathrooms and added plenty of little touches that reflected who we are and what we wanted a stay at The Yan to feel like.
But the thing we’re most proud of isn’t actually inside.
It’s outside.
When we designed them, we weren’t trying to create another luxury pod. We were trying to create somewhere that celebrated this place. Somewhere that worked for us, for our weather and for the views that bring people to the Lake District in the first place.
That’s why we built large covered decks.
That’s why we added comfortable all-weather seating.
That’s why we installed glass balustrades, so nothing interrupted the views.
We created sheltered spaces where you can watch the weather roll across the fells, spot wildlife in the fields, enjoy a summer sunset or simply sit outside with a coffee while the rain does what Lake District rain does.
The view was always the luxury.

Glamping near Grasmere, but not as you know it
The Lookouts are not just somewhere to sleep.
They’re somewhere to stop, sit, breathe and look out.
They were designed for slow mornings, big skies, fell views, cosy evenings and the kind of quiet that makes you properly switch off.
From the deck, you can watch sheep wandering past in the morning, chickens poking their heads in to say hello, red squirrels darting through the trees and birds of prey circling above the valley.
In every season, the view changes.
Spring brings new life to the fields. Summer brings long evenings and golden light. Autumn changes the colours of the fells. Winter brings crisp mornings, low clouds and the kind of cosy Lake District stay people dream about.
And because the decks are covered, you don’t need perfect weather to enjoy it.
In fact, sometimes the best moments happen when the rain rolls in.
Dark skies, quiet nights and proper Lake District peace
Away from towns, streetlights and the glow of everyday life, The Yan enjoys some of the darkest skies in the valley.
On a clear night, the stars feel endless. Constellations appear where most people haven’t seen them for years and, if you’re lucky, you might even catch a glimpse of the Northern Lights above the fells.
Some of our favourite guest photos have been taken long after the sun has gone down.
That’s part of why the word “pod” started to feel too small.
Because The Lookouts are about more than the space itself.
They’re about the feeling of being here.
The quiet.
The weather.
The wildlife.
The stars.
The views.
The feeling of being completely immersed in the Lake District without giving up comfort.
Why the name changed
When our first glamping pod arrived on the farm over ten years ago, the word made sense.
But things have changed.
The accommodation has changed. The experience has changed. What guests feel when they stay here has changed too.
The new name, The Lookouts, reflects what these spaces were designed for from the very beginning.
To celebrate the fells, the landscape, the wildlife, the weather and those little moments that make people fall in love with this part of the Lake District.
And perhaps, every now and then, to remind us to look up and appreciate it too.
Welcome to The Lookouts at The Yan
So yes, we’re retiring The Pods.
But they’re not disappearing.
They have a new name, a better story and the same beautiful views that made guests love them in the first place.
Welcome to The Lookouts at The Yan.
Lake District accommodation built for the fells, the weather, the wildlife and the moments that make you stop and look up.
With love from the farm,
Dave, Sally, Jess, Gee and all of us at The Yan
