Dog Friendly Lake District Stays Made for the Whole Family

In summer, the Lake District properly comes alive.

The fells get greener, the evenings stretch out, the wildflowers start showing off and suddenly a “quick little walk” turns into three hours, a lake dip and someone needing a very large tea afterwards.

Whether you are planning a spontaneous last-minute weekend away, a proper walking holiday near Grasmere or a family friendly Lake District break with the dog in tow, this part of Cumbria has everything you need for a good summer escape.

And if you are looking for dog friendly accommodation in the Lake District, The Yan is a pretty good place to start.

Set at Broadrayne Farm, just outside Grasmere, The Yan is surrounded by fells, lakes, walking routes, quiet lanes, village pubs and plenty of places for the whole family to explore. Dogs included, obviously.

Family Friendly Stays, Dogs Very Much Included

At The Yan, we want the whole family to enjoy the best of the Lake District in summer. That means long walks, sunny pub trips, proper food, big views, muddy boots and dogs curled up under the table after a day of acting like they personally discovered the fells.

The Lake District is the perfect playground for families and dogs alike, with roaming trails, beautiful hikes, quiet lanes and lakes to cool off in during the warmer months. After a full day exploring Grasmere, Rydal, Ambleside and the surrounding fells, we want all of you to be able to come back, relax and enjoy a peaceful evening in the heart of the Lakes.

We do not just allow dogs. We love having them to stay with us.

That is why we offer a range of dog friendly holiday cottages and dog friendly hotel rooms near Grasmere, so you can choose the stay that works best for you. Whether you want a cosy room for two, a self catered cottage or a family friendly base for a longer Lake District break, there are plenty of options.

Your dog will also be welcomed with complimentary poo bags, designated doggy towels and a special locally sourced dog treat, so they know they are part of the holiday from day one.

Where to Walk With Your Dog Near Grasmere

While lots of us love dogs, some of the local livestock are not quite so relaxed when they see an excited furry companion heading their way.

There are lots of brilliant dog friendly walks near Grasmere and around the Lake District, many of which our own dogs often enjoy. We just ask that you are mindful of other animals, keep dogs under close control and pop them on a lead when walking through fields with livestock.

If you are staying at The Yan with your dog this summer, these are some of our favourite local walks.

Helm Crag

Helm Crag is one of the best walks near Grasmere and it has The Yan tucked away at its base, which is very handy if you like your fell walks to start without a faff.

It is a brilliant choice if you want a proper Lake District walk straight from the door, without having to load everyone into the car first. The trail is well marked and regularly walked, with beautiful views over Grasmere and the surrounding fells once you reach the top.

It is a great option for families, couples and dogs who like a bit of adventure, although you will still want sensible footwear and a lead for any livestock sections.

Easedale Tarn

Easedale Tarn is a favourite summer walk near Grasmere, especially when the weather is warm.

The route takes you through classic Lake District scenery, with waterfalls, fell views and plenty of places to stop along the way. On a hot day, reaching the tarn feels like a proper reward, especially if you have packed lunch and enough snacks to stop everyone getting dramatic.

The walk begins close to Grasmere village, which also makes it very easy to pick up a little fuel from the famous Grasmere Gingerbread Shop before you set off.

Rydal Water

Rydal Water is ideal for families visiting the Lake District because it gives you plenty of choice.

You can keep things gentle with a relaxed lakeside walk, visit the famous Rydal Caves or make the route longer by exploring the surrounding paths and hills. It is one of those walks that can be as easy or as active as you want it to be.

It is also a lovely option for dog friendly days out near Grasmere, with beautiful views, plenty of fresh air and lots of places to stop and take it all in.

Set at Broadrayne Farm, just outside Grasmere, our bistro is all about hearty, seasonal food with proper Cumbrian comfort. We source locally where we can and our menu is built around the kind of food you actually want after a day exploring the Lake District.

Think muddy boots, tired dogs, happy kids, good wine, proper plates of food and someone saying, “I’m absolutely not having pudding” before ordering pudding.
