Nice Places to Stay in the Lake District - The Yan

If you are planning a trip to the Lake District and wondering where to stay, you are in the right place. It is one of the phrases people search the most and honestly we get asked it daily at The Yan. The Lakes is full of tiny villages tucked between fells and fields and each one has its own charm, depending on what kind of break you are after. As a family who lives, works and wanders here every day we wanted to put together a friendly guide to some of the nicest places to stay in the Lake District, from our local point of view.

Whether you want walks from the door, a calm hideaway or somewhere with a bit of buzz there will be a corner of Cumbria that feels just right.

Grasmere: cosy beds good scran and proper Lake District views

We have to start with Grasmere... because it is home. It is one of those villages that never really loses its charm no matter the season. Surrounded by gentle fells and pretty lanes it feels peaceful, even when the rest of the Lakes is busy. Our own little bistro-with-beds sits at the foot of Helm Crag, with sheep wandering past and guests heading out for an early morning walk. It is what Cumbria is all about.

Grasmere suits walkers, couples and anyone who wants somewhere warm, friendly and close to the big walks without needing to jump in the car every five minutes.

Ambleside: lively, walkable and a top spot for food lovers

Ambleside has a completely different energy. There is always something going on. You can wander from cafés to pubs to the lake without having to plan a thing. It is brilliant if you like a bit of life around you and want lots of options for rainy days. Ambleside is spot-on for loved-up walkers families and anyone who prefers a livelier base for their Lake District getaway.

Keswick: big fells, big views and very dog-friendly

Keswick is one of the best places to stay in the Lakes if you want dramatic scenery. With Derwentwater on one side and Skiddaw towering above, it feels wild and beautiful all at once. It is also extremely dog-friendly which is why so many families head there year after year. Think muddy boots steaming by fires and pups having the best time ever.

Keswick is perfect for anyone who loves proper Cumbrian hill days or wants easy access to Borrowdale and the quieter northern valleys.

Hawkshead: picture-perfect and peaceful

Hawkshead feels like stepping back in time in the loveliest way. Cobbled lanes, slate cottages and sleepy evenings. It is ideal if you want something gentle and pretty. The walks around here are gorgeous and less busy than places like Ambleside and Windermere. Hawkshead is also a great base for exploring Coniston and the quieter western side of the Lakes.

Coniston: lakeside magic and real Lakeland history

Coniston is an easy favourite. The lake is stunning and feels much calmer than the bigger ones. The Old Man of Coniston rises above the village and gives the whole area a proper rugged feel. It is brilliant for hikers, wild swimmers and anyone who wants a “classic Lakes but not overcrowded” kind of trip.

Hop on the Coniston Launch, walk to Tarn Hows or explore Ruskin’s old home if you like a bit of history with your holiday.

Why The Yan is a lovely place to stay in the Lake District

If you like things warm homely and a bit unpretentious you will feel right at home at The Yan. We are a family-run bistro-with-beds in the heart of Grasmere and our whole approach is about making people feel welcome, rested and very well fed. Think hearty bowls of good scran, cosy rooms, soft lighting and that quiet sense of calm that only the Lakes can give you.

We are dog-friendly, walker-friendly and “come as you are” friendly. Walks start from the door, the views change with every season and you can come back to a plate of something delicious without lifting a finger. If you are looking for a proper Cumbrian break The Yan is a cracking choice.

How to choose the right place to stay in the Lakes

Think about the pace you want. Lively like Ambleside or peaceful like Hawkshead.
Check what walks you want to do and how close they are.
Decide if you want water views, fell views or something tucked away.
Choose somewhere that matches the mood of your break.

Final thoughts

There are so many nice places to stay in the Lake District and the best part is that each village gives you a completely different experience. Whether you want a lively weekend wandering Ambleside, a peaceful retreat in Grasmere or a proper mountainy break in Keswick there is no wrong choice.

We hope this guide helps you find the perfect Cumbrian base for your next trip and if you fancy something cosy, homely and full of good food we would love to welcome you to The Yan.
